What’s happening with the leak and piracy issue?
After the release of this film in Japan, many people started capturing the images and started recording the film in the theater and began to publish it on Social media and on other Sites. In some cases, the entire scenes have been shot inside cinemas without authorization. The film’s official accounts and the production committee too have confirmed that these unauthorized recordings are real, and that they violated Japan’s 'Film Piracy Prevention Law' for recording the movie inside theaters and also the 'Copyright laws' for uploading and distributing the footage. The committee’s public statement emphasizes that such recording and uploading or sharing these illegally recorded videos even short clips or screenshots is a form of copyright infringement and a crime. The timing of the leak is particularly sensitive because the film is still in theaters and the global release is being staggered.
What steps the studio is taking?
They have warned that though some uploads may be anonymous, but sources can still be traced. In their message they also point to potential penalties that is up to 10 years in prison, or fines as high as 10 million yen, or even both, for such violations of these laws. To combat the piracy issue, the production committee and related entities have publicly announced a number of measures:
Public warning and advisory:
The studio has issued an official statement via the 'Chainsaw Man' social media accounts, explicitly calling out unauthorized theater recordings and screenshot of images, declaring them illegal, and also warning fans to refrain from uploading or sharing such content.
Threat of legal action:
They have threatened to pursue criminal complaints against egregious offenders. Their statement covers both the 'Film Piracy Prevention Law' and the 'Copyright Act', with also mentioning of maximum penalties that is up to 10 years in prison and up to 10 million yen in fines.
Tracking of Sources:
Even when users attempt to upload content anonymously, the committee claims that the sources can be traced and identified.
Vigilance during theatrical screenings:
Studios often increase the monitoring in cinemas, work with theaters to prevent unauthorized recording for e.g. signage, staff vigilance, security checks, and issue takedown notices swiftly to platforms. The public statements’ strong tone suggests that the committee is ready to act quickly.
We all know that Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc is one of the most anticipated anime films of this year 2025, following a successful first season and a strong fan base. But it's obvious that with high demand comes high risk that is unauthorized recordings of the film are already surfacing online, threatening its theatrical revenue, narrative impact, and the studio’s ability to control its rollout. Also in response, 'MAPPA' and the production committee have adopted a firm stance such as - public warnings, threats of criminal action, tracing uploads, and strategic release timing are all part of their effort to minimize damage and deter further leaks. If fans respect these boundaries by not engaging in piracy, the film has a better chance to succeed globally in theaters. What do you guys think of this matter?
