Next-Gen Consoles Could Be Delayed Due to Rising RAM Prices.

In late 2025, multiple gaming and tech outlets reported the rising prices and limited availability of computer memory (RAM) and this could impact the release schedules and pricing of next-generation consoles such as the PlayStation 6 and the next Xbox. Reports claim that RAM module prices have surged significantly, because global supply has tightened and demand has shifted heavily toward enterprise customers such as "AI data centers". Sony and Microsoft who are console manufacturers, use large amounts of high-performance RAM in their hardware designs. So if RAM stays expensive and short in supply, it could increase manufacturing costs and also delay console launches.

The reason for the shortage of RAM is huge demand for memory from AI and cloud infrastructure, because 'Modern AI Systems' and large data centers use huge amounts of memory. So it forces manufacturers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron to prioritize these customers over consumer markets. Another main reason is that "Memory Technology" is shifting from older DDR4 to newer DDR5. New DDR5 production capacity is still limited and DDR4 production is winding down, adding to strain on overall memory supply and complexity in the manufacturing.

Limited production is also one of the basic reasons as the 'Semiconductor fabs' take years and huge investments to build. Reports says that some memory makers are intentionally reducing consumer RAM output and shifting the capacity toward higher-profit enterprise, thereby tightening supply for regular DDR4 or DDR5 modules. In short, the memory market is undergoing structural pressure as the demand has increased faster than supply can expand, and priorities have also shifted toward high-end enterprise needs.

There will be some consequences if this continues. Consoles will get even more expensive and even analysts have already warned about potential 10-15% price hikes in 2026 for current systems. Manufacturers might postpone releases to wait for memory costs to drop or supplies to increase, especially for next-generation models which are planned around 2027-2028. High RAM prices have already pushed up costs for PCs, laptops, and might slow shipment growth and Gamers, PC builders, and average buyers might see higher prices and less inventory for memory-dependent tech for years.

Even after this news, what remains unconfirmed is that neither Sony nor Microsoft has officially confirmed any delay to next-gen console releases due to RAM pricing or shortages. All reports are from industry insiders, analysts, and media outlets. There is no clear prediction on when memory prices will stabilize or decline and we still don't know the exact impact on console costs. In short, this is a developing situation that is still not confirmed. What do you guys think on the shortage of RAM? Let us know your answers in the comments.
